Decentralise control of NHS - call from local directors

As a national survey reveals that waiting times are increasing at hospital accident and emergency departments, company directors in Cambridgeshire have called for administration of the National Health Service to be decentralised to improve performance.

Stephanie Smye, chairman of the Eastern Branch of the Institute of Directors (IoD), said: “The NHS, with almost one million employees, is far too big to try to run centrally. Serious consideration should be given to publicly funded NHS bodies such as hospital and primary care trusts becoming truly locally self-governing bodies.

“Enormous amounts of money are being spent on health services but they are failing to satisfy public needs. By taking NHS funded healthcare services out of direct state control it would permit funds to be channelled to patient care rather than unnecessary administration.”

Miss Smye said the IoD want to see a single regulatory body established to oversee all public and private healthcare and long-term care operations.
