Local bosses welcome Chancellor's enterprise proposals

Cambridgeshire company directors have welcomed plans by Chancellor Gordon Brown to develop an ‘enterprise economy’.

The Eastern Branch of the Institute of Directors - which represents almost 1,000 local company leaders - says that the Chancellor’s proposals for enterprise are helpful to business, even though they do not significantly address the twin problems of the higher tax burden on business since 1997 and the increasing regulation of the labour market.

Stephanie Smye, chairman of the Eastern Branch, said: “The Chancellor’s proposals are, on balance, undoubtedly helpful for business. Indeed we have been lobbying for many of them and we are pleased the government has listened to us and is prepared to act. We particularly welcome the proposed changes to CGT, the abolition of Crown Preference in insolvency cases, the review of ‘enterprise and business’ in education and the review of the antiquated planning system. We look forward to the delivery of the proposals.

“However, the proposals do little to reduce the increased tax take on business since 1977 and do nothing to stop the avalanche of employment regulations which are particularly irksome for small businesses.”
