Drain doctor network back approved plumbers initiative

A new scheme which will help protect people from shoddy work performed by 'cowboy plumbers' received a major boost this week with the backing of Drain Doctor Plumbing - the country's biggest emergency plumbing organisation.

The Water Industry Approved Plumber Scheme (WIAPS) will compile a national register of plumbers who can demonstrate their competence with professional qualifications and a portfolio of relevant work experience.

Approved plumbers will be issued with identification cards and will receive regular up-dates on new procedures. They will also have access to technical support and advice on water regulations.

Drain Doctor general manager Mike Solomons said: "Drain Doctor has always been at the forefront in the fight against cowboy plumbers and we applaud this national scheme as a major new initiative in that battle.

"Drain Doctor is committed to having all of the businesses in its franchise network join the scheme at the earliest opportunity. With Drain Doctor leading the way in joining the scheme it is hoped that many other reputable firms will be encouraged to follow our lead."

Since being launched in 1994, Drain Doctor Plumbing has grown rapidly and now has more than 60 franchise areas covering 90 per cent of the UK population.

The company offer genuine 24-hour call-out service and provides fixed-price quotations before work so that customers know exactly how much they will be charged. All work is also guaranteed.

Details of Water Industry Approved Plumbers will be published on a national website and will also be available from customer call centres operated by water suppliers. Approved plumbers will be issued with a certificate, identification card and vehicle stickers to improve customer confidence in the plumbing industry and distinguish qualified plumbers from 'cowboy' operators.

Approved plumbers are authorised to 'self-certify' their work under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, giving them exemption from notifying water supply companies when undertaking certain installations.
