A new scheme which will
help protect people from shoddy work performed by 'cowboy plumbers'
received a major boost this week with the backing of Drain Doctor Plumbing
- the country's biggest emergency plumbing organisation.
The Water Industry Approved
Plumber Scheme (WIAPS) will compile a national register of plumbers who
can demonstrate their competence with professional qualifications and a
portfolio of relevant work experience.
Approved plumbers will be
issued with identification cards and will receive regular up-dates on new
procedures. They will also have access to technical support and advice on

national scheme as a major new initiative in that battle.

encouraged to follow our lead."
Since being launched in
1994, Drain Doctor Plumbing has grown rapidly and now has more than 60
franchise areas covering 90 per cent of the UK population.

Approved Plumbers will be published on a national website and will also be
available from customer call centres operated by water suppliers. Approved
plumbers will be issued with a certificate, identification card and
vehicle stickers to improve customer confidence in the plumbing industry
and distinguish qualified plumbers from 'cowboy' operators.
Approved plumbers are
authorised to 'self-certify' their work under the Water Supply (Water
Fittings) Regulations, giving them exemption from notifying water supply
companies when undertaking certain installations.
