Unfair rules for the transport industry

Business | Press | News

The unequal rights experienced by the transport industry with regard to the Working Time Directive was today highlighted by the European Commission’s decision to retain the individual opt-out from the 48 hour week.

Despite these changes being endorsed by the EU, the transport industry is still going to be subject to the Working Time Directive with the non-inclusion of the opt-out as of March next year.

John Bridge OBE - chief executive of Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce

Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, John Bridge OBE commented: ‘We have campaigned for some time for the implementation of the Working Time Directive for the transport industry to be reviewed.

"We feel very strongly that this industry is being treated unfairly by the non-inclusion of the opt-out in their Directive. The opt-out needs to be included as part of their implementation to ensure that British hauliers can compete effectively in this country and on the continent."

He continued: ‘It is absurd that the transport industry should be subject to different rules – surely the Directive should be reviewed at the sane time and in the same way for all industries!"
