Businesses pull together for local charities

Cash-strapped businesses have raised £3,700 for the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices at a series of events organised by the Chamber of Commerce.

Peterborough Chamber of Commerce

The children’s charity, which relies on public support for around 75 per cent of their required income, had until recently been the Chamber’s nominated charity of the year and funds raised at key events including a summer ball, annual golf day and a construction dinner have now been gratefully received into the charity’s coffers.

Iain Crighton, Chairman of Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, said: “For many years now we have pledged our support to a wide variety of local charities, and it is a great privilege not only to offer organisations such as EACH fundraising opportunities but also to raise awareness of the extraordinary services that the charity provides. We are always a little overwhelmed by the generosity and support shown by our members, not just through attending events held in aid of our chosen charity but by entering raffles, donating raffle prizes and even organising additional fundraising events within their own companies.”

The Chamber’s newly-appointed charity of the year for the coming twelve months is Deafblind UK, a national charity which supports deafblind people and those who have progressive sight and hearing loss acquired throughout their lives.

Jeff Skipp, Chief Executive of Deafblind UK, said: “It is a great honour to have been nominated as the Chamber’s dedicated charity of the year, and we would like to thank the business community in advance for supporting us.

"Deafblind UK is a dynamic charity, with our head office and conference facilities located at Hampton and support networks for our members throughout the whole of Cambridgeshire. We are very much looking forward to working with the Chamber and engaging with the local business community.”
