Local businesses looking to escape the clutches of the credit crunch should consider expanding their marketplace to the Gulf region, according to the Chamber of Commerce.

Peterborough Chamber of Commerce

The leading business membership organisation claims that despite the declining global economy there are now more opportunities than ever before in areas such as Bahrain and Dubai.

Speaking ahead of a forthcoming Chamber seminar on these opportunities, John Bridge OBE, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “Despite the economic downturn and decline in the oil price since the peaks of the summer the Gulf region remains committed to substantial growth. As a result there are a whole host of business opportunities currently available in areas such as Dubai, Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia. “With the Cambridgeshire economy weathering the economic storm better than most, now is an ideal time for the county’s businesses to spread their wings and start taking advantage of some of the opportunities out there. “The Chamber is committed to equipping local businesses with the knowledge and expertise needed to maximise the potential offered by the region, and our forthcoming seminar will focus not just on connecting businesses with potential contacts from the area but also give an insight into the culture and language issues businesses will encounter.”

Organised in partnership with UKT&I and East of England International, the event will feature key speakers from the Bahrain Economic Development Board, the Government of Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce and Pathfinder Business magazine. The evening will also include practical advice from local businesses that are already active and successful in the Gulf Region through a series of case studies.

Chris Kubicki, Senior International Trade Adviser for UKT&I and East of England, added: “We have been particularly fortunate in arranging presentations addressing the complexity of the cultural issues confronting the exporter in dealing with clients, partners and government, while the case study will focus on a strategic approach to researching and making the first visit to the region so should provide an excellent model for those poised to ‘have a go’. “This seminar will offer an exceptional opportunity for businesses to find out not just how to successfully engage with this different business culture but also to access the expertise and support available for business development in the region.”
