Peter Brotherhood - the
Peterborough, UK, based supplier of engineered equipment for the
petrochemical and process industries - has won a $2 million (£1.3
million) order to build two innovative compressor packages for a Chinese
The machines have been ordered
by the China Yanshan United Foreign Trade Company for installation at the
Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Group Company at Yanshan near Beijing.
Each package is based around
what appears to be a single four-cylinder reciprocating compressor - but
two cylinders of each machine will handle hydrogen make-up gas whilst the
other two simultaneously handle recycling gas for diesel fuel hydrofining.
Each compressor is designed to meet the refinery’s total make-up and
recycling gas requirement so that one machine can be operating whilst one
is on stand-by, ensuring continuous availability of this critical
Conventionally this type of
requirement would be met with two medium-sized reciprocating compressors
to handle make-up gas (one running and one on stand-by) whilst recycling
would be achieved with a single centrifugal compressor, backed up with a
full set of spares (including a spare rotor).
Opting for Peter Brotherhood’s
solution of two large reciprocating compressors, each capable of handling
the full make-up and recycling load, has provided a higher level of
reliability at a lower initial cost and with lower power demand than the
more conventional solution.
The new machines are due to be
delivered to China before the end of the year.
