Illegal trading - Easter Sunday

Business | Articles

Peterborough City Council is reminding shop keepers that it is illegal to open large shops to trade on Easter Sunday, 11 April.

The Sunday Trading Act 1994 makes it an offence for shops with an internal floor area above 280 square metres to trade on Easter Sunday.

This includes most large shops such as supermarkets, DIY stores, department stores and even some garden centres. Exemptions to the Act include motor and cycle suppliers, petrol filling stations and registered pharmacies.

The city council has a legal duty to enforce this legislation and opening could result in a hefty fine of up to 50,000 for the owner of the shop.

Gail Lewis, Environmental Health Officer for the city council, said "Peterborough City Council takes the enforcement of this legislation very seriously and the appropriate formal action will be taken against the owner of all shops found to be trading illegally."

Further information about Sunday trading law is available from the Peterborough City Council's Environmental Health Section on (01733) 453574.
