Local businesses urged to be vigilant

Business | Articles

Peterborough City Council's Trading Standards Officers are renewing their previous warnings to local businesses to be on the look out for sharp practices after receiving a number of complaints involving business directories.

Companies are being offered entries into business directories or advertising space in business magazines, trade and fax directories, by either invoices or personal calls to businesses.

Often the directories do not exist or if they do they are only produced in small quantities. There may be hidden terms and conditions or the companies may discover that money is debited out of their accounts without their knowledge. Some companies have been persuaded to pay in advance for advertising space in publications, which never actually appear or only have limited circulation.

Nick Garnham, Senior Trading Standards Officer for the city council, said "We often get reports of this sort of practice and we would urge businesses to be aware of this and ensure they check the credibility of these companies. Businesses should always read the small print."

Peterborough based companies can contact Peterborough City Council's Trading Standards department for further information and advice on (01733) 453532.
