Some emails are offering services to
register clients with the Data Protection Registrar for a fee.
Many people and organisations have
details about consumers on computer or in paper files. To ensure this
information is handled properly there are laws to ensure its accuracy.
It is not necessary to have an agent acting for the company.
Although not illegal, companies may be
misled into thinking they have to register through an agent. This can
be done simply by contacting the Data Protection Registrar directly.
Roger Woodthorpe, Section Head of
Trading Standards for the city council, said, “Companies should be
reminded that they do not need an agent to register directly with the
Data Protection Registrar. They can contact the registrar themselves
and pay the fee of £35 per year directly.”
