A recent work effectiveness study has explored the quality of work life and the economic impact of both ergonomics training and use of the Steelcase Leap chair, available from Peterborough based design company breathe.

The Steelcase Leap chair

Three groups of 100 workers have been involved in the study in which the Leap chairs are being tested: one group received Leap chairs and ergonomics training; one received training only; and a control group received neither training nor Leap chairs.

Data collected at two and six-month intervals indicate the group that received a Leap chair accompanied by formal training:

  • Showed a 4.5 % increase in productivity.

  • Benefited from decreased physical limitations for the upper and lower back, neck and lower extremities.

  • Reported reductions in the levels of pain, discomfort and fatigue experienced over the course of the workday.

Increased productivity levels were also experienced by employees who reported pain levels as "distracting" prior to receiving a Leap chair and training.

Nearly 1,000 knowledge workers will be included in the full study, which is being conducted by leading ergonomists, workplace experts and independent researchers. “This study is one of the most
comprehensive scientific efforts to link an ergonomic product and training to health, employee productivity and return on investment for a corporation," said Dr Ben Amick of Health and Work Outcomes.

Mike Bird, Managing Director of The breathe Group, explained. ‘This study has demonstrated that Leap seating technology coupled with appropriate training can have a significant impact on the comfort of an end-user and ultimately their productivity.
